Frequently Asked Questions

The Hooked on Courage Course is a 6-week arts-integrated program for grades K–12 that blends creativity, emotional intelligence, and resilience training. Through age-appropriate lessons in storytelling, art, music, drama, and reflection, children learn how to express themselves, build confidence, and develop the courage to thrive in school and beyond.

The Hooked on Courage Course is a 6-week, arts-integrated enrichment program for students in grades K–12 built around five learning pillars that support the whole child — creatively, socially, emotionally, physically, and practically.

The inspiration for these pillars comes in part from the storytelling themes in the book Hooked on the Wizard of Oz, where symbolic characters such as the Cowardly Lion (representing courage), Boss Eagle (representing leadership and vision), and the Owl (representing wisdom and insight) help guide students on a journey of growth and self-discovery.

These traits also reflect the real-life journey of young ventriloquist Ana-Maria Margean, whose perseverance, creativity, and confidence helped her rise to the top of Romania’s Got Talent and later reach the finals of America’s Got Talent: The Champions. Her story illustrates how courage, imagination, and determination can help young people achieve extraordinary goals.

Hooked on Courage
Inspired by the Cowardly Lion’s transformation, students develop confidence, mindset, and communication skills through storytelling, visualization, public speaking exercises, and guided reflection. The focus is on helping children believe in their own voice and abilities.

Hooked on Harmony
Drawing from the idea that creativity brings balance and connection, students explore music, rhythm, movement, and performance. The arts become a pathway for teamwork, emotional expression, and collaborative problem-solving.

Hooked on Humanity
Guided by themes of empathy and community found throughout the story, students learn respect, citizenship, cultural awareness, and how their actions can positively impact others.

Hooked on HomeSense
Reflecting the importance of grounded life skills, this pillar helps students build independence and responsibility through age-appropriate lessons in organization, etiquette, teamwork, and everyday decision-making.

Hooked on Healthiness
Inspired by the need for strong minds and bodies on any journey, students explore movement, breathing techniques, stress-management tools, and healthy habit formation that support focus and resilience.

Together, these five pillars create a holistic experience that helps students become “hooked” on courage, creativity, leadership, wisdom, and personal growth — skills that support success both inside and beyond the classroom.

This course is for all children, everywhere. It’s perfect for:

  • Schools (K–12) — public, private, and charter

  • Title 1 schools — where arts education has been reduced or cut

  • Homeschool families — providing a structured, creative curriculum

  • Afterschool programs — enriching afternoons with creativity and teamwork

  • Hospitals & pediatric programs — helping children find courage and joy during difficult times

  • Churches, synagogues, and children’s ministries — blending arts and values-based education

  • Kids’ camps — offering fun, engaging lessons that build life skills in a group setting

  • Community organizations — anywhere children gather to grow, learn, or heal

The program consists of five different CourAgeOUS courses, each meeting once per week and lasting approximately 45 minutes.

* Each student gets their own softcover book of Hooked on the Wizard of Oz by Shannon Elizabeth Johnson starring John Assaraf as the modern day Wizard and Ana-Maria Margean, the self-taught ventriloquist who won the 11th season of Romania’s Got Talent at age 11 in 2011.

* A famous quote written on the board or included in the lesson for the day
* A guided Innercise® breathing technique
A 15-20 minute class relevant to the famous quote of the day
A 10-15 minute exercise in ventriloquism or other depending on the grade
A 10- minute edification exercise where each student goes around the room and says one thing that impressed them about the student that they picked out the hat in the beginning of class

Students finish the course with:

  • Confidence to share ideas and express themselves

  • Emotional intelligence to recognize and manage feelings

  • Resilience to face setbacks with courage

  • Collaboration skills to work as a team and respect others

  • Creativity to solve problems and think beyond the box

No. The program comes with a Teacher’s Guide, student workbooks, and step-by-step instructions. Whether you’re a teacher, parent, camp leader, hospital volunteer, or ministry director, you can confidently guide children through the course.

The content is flexible for every age group:

  • Grades K–2: Play-based crafts, songs, and role-playing introduce kindness and courage.

  • Grades 3–5: Creative writing, arts, and group projects focus on teamwork and empathy.

  • Grades 6–8: Collaborative challenges, role-play, and reflection teach resilience and leadership.

  • Grades 9–12: Advanced projects, presentations, and community engagement build confidence and prepare teens for real-world challenges.

We introduce technology as a tool for creativity and innovation. Younger students might use simple drawing or music apps, while older students may create videos, digital art, or multimedia presentations. By teaching children to use technology positively and creatively, we help them see it as a way to build, connect, and share — not just consume.

Bullying — both in-person and online — is a reality children face today. This course tackles it head-on by teaching empathy, self-worth, and courage. Students practice role-playing, learn conflict resolution strategies, and discuss the impact of words and actions. For older students, we specifically address cyberbullying, teaching safe, responsible, and respectful use of social media. The goal is to empower students to stand strong, stand kind, and stand together.

  • For Students: They gain confidence, courage, and creativity that last a lifetime.

  • For Educators & Leaders: The ready-to-use program supports social-emotional learning goals while making classrooms and groups more engaged and connected.

  • For Families & Communities: Children bring home lessons of respect, empathy, and resilience, creating stronger families and more compassionate communities.

That’s why Hooked on Courage is more than a course — it’s a movement for positive change.

Yes. Schools and organizations can access the program through digital resources — including guides, videos, and worksheets — or they can print their own workbooks and facilitator materials using their preferred paper and printing methods.

This flexible delivery model makes the program ideal for classrooms, after-school programs, hospitals, homeschool groups, and camps. It also helps keep overall costs low while allowing each organization to implement the course in the way that best fits their environment and students.
